Additional Topics

You may have thought I was done looking for new papers to read but you we’re wrong. I found two more that area really going to help understand Direct Current which will help me to better explain it to you in my paper. Here they are:

The first one is paper on a study of the feasibility of a Direct Current power grid. It explores the requirements that are required for this kind of system to work. They explore what kind of technology is prevalent in today’s world. It also explores what kind of technology was available in twenties when the power grid was in it’s infancy. What kind equipment even needs to be in place for this to work? That is what this paper explores.

I’m excited to use this paper in my essay. This paper is very comprehensive in the way that it explains direct current power grids and the evolution they took to be where they are today. A lot of research had to be done in order to get to where we are now. This paper will help to understand and then put into my paper with a greater level of understanding. Specifically though, I like this paper because it details the topic that I am endeavoring to explain in my paper.

D. Jovcic, D. V. Hertem, K. Linden, J.-P. Taisne, and W. Grieshaber, “Feasibility of dc transmission networks,” in Proc. 2nd IEEE PES International Conference and Exhibition on Innovative Smart Grid Technologies, 2011.

This next paper is one I am particularity interested in because of the specific topics it covers. It talks about the benefits of having a DC internal system, say for homes and buildings. “This paper examines existing and future direct current (DC) distribution systems with a wide range of applications in data centers, telecommunication systems, commercial buildings, residential homes, electric vehicles, spacecraft, and aircrafts. DC distribution systems have many advantages and disadvantages over their alternating current (AC) counterparts.”

I’m going to use this essay not only because it talks about DC power grids but because it outlines the specific uses for DC power. This will help me to further explain why I believe direct current is the best option we have for making a better power grid. It will help me to draw the conclusions of what kind of equipment can actually run on a DC power grid.

This blog entry is about the different sources I’ll be using to introduce AC and DC grids.

Primer on transmission: AC vs. DC. (Power Pointers) – This paper in short is an overview of the difference about direct current alternating current. It gives a brief history about the two and why alternating current for now is the best way we can do things. It goes on to further explain why direct current is extremely beneficial for the AC power grid. It’s needed to connect the two together because of phase differences. He also describes how someday in the future we’ll be able to transition to a completely DC power grid which would clear up so many issues and make the whole power distribution system stronger and more efficient.

Why this article is important to my paper. This article was an amazing overview of why alternating current and direct current are different and why they work well together. I’ve learned that they are needed because AC has the ability to be stepped up in voltage better and DC has the ability to have no power loss over great distances. I’ll be able to use his paper as a great opener to more complex ideas.

AC vs. DC distribution: A loss comparison – This paper is honestly a more complex version of my paper. It describes and outlines the exact reasons as to why the AC power grid is outdated and has some huge drawbacks. Mainly relating to green technologies and what kind of devices are on the grid today. Many of the new green technologies produce DC current and many of the devices that consume power are DC. The need to then convert the power over is a waste of energy.

This article will be very useful because it outlines the exact reasons I want to put forth in my paper. Why are we still using AC power grids when everything we use is DC and even then most of the things that use AC are a product of the power grid being AC. This article gives good understanding which in turn will help me better explain these things to you.

Ultra-high Voltage AC/DC Grids – This book actually outlines the way China has been building their power grid. It also outlines the advantages and disadvantages to using Ultra High Voltage systems (UHV). It discusses the differences between an AC and DC UHV grid. It also discusses the research and development that China has done to produce better systems to transmit power. This is really interesting to me because of the huge demand China has for power.

I’m especially excited to read parts of this book because it will give the much needed in-depth background not only for this paper but also for later on in my field of study. This book will help my paper because of the new systems that are being created to transmit and deploy newer DC grid systems.

Ultra-high Voltage AC/DC Grids – The reason I chose this paper was because it describes a very important aspect to the power grid, power generation. Many sources of power rely on AC. Take a wind turbine for example, this device produces power in alternating current. If we were on a completely DC grid we would have to convert it to DC. This article describes the best way to transmit power over a long distance and how the method of transportation affects the power generation itself.

This article is going to be useful because it will give further background on DC and AC grids and why one is better than the other or at least for now how they best can interact with each other. It will also help by showing different use cases. How does AC and DC power work on the grid but how does work with power generation.

Research Topic Announcement

Alright so I know that this assignment is super late but I’ve been abadoned my previous topic due to it being hard to find sources. The new topic I’ve picked is one much closer to my actual interests and one that I hope will help everyone who reads it know a little bit one how the way electricity gets to your house along with all the research that had to be done to get it to work.

Topic: Power Transmission over Distance: Alternating Current or Direct Current

Ever since the discovery of electricity there has been a battle between Alternating Current and Direct Current. Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla were their champions respectively.

My sources all have to do with how power is either collected or transmitted or both. Here they are:

  1. This source appears in the March 2007 edition of IEEE magagizne and details the advantages of using direct Current to transport power from off-shore wind turbines to shore. Bresesti, Paola, et al. EZProxy Login, IEEE, Mar. 2007, ieeexplore-ieee-org.hal.weber.edu/xpls/icp.jsp?arnumber=4105997.
  2. This next sources is a book written specifically about AC and DC style transmission methods. Liu, Zhenya. Ultra-High Voltage AC/DC Grids. Elsevier, 2015.
  3. In this source it discusses the efficiency of both Alternating Current and Direct Current. Starke , Michael. EZProxy Login, 12 May 2008, ieeexplore-ieee-org.hal.weber.edu/document/4517256.
  4. This last source discusses the benefits of using a DC based Power transmission system. “Primer on transmission: AC vs. DC. (Power Pointers).” Electric Light & Power, vol. 80, no. 6, June 2002, p. 38. Gale OneFile: Business, https://link-gale-com.hal.weber.edu/apps/doc/A87468680/ITBC?u=ogde72764&sid=ITBC&xid=f2c0c3f1. Funny?

Hello and welcome again to my blog discussing the English language. Today we’re going to discuss the article The Dog Ate My Tablet, and Other Tales of Woe. In this article the writer, a professor, recounts her experiences with students excuses to being late and they are hilarious. She details five different types of of excuses: 1. The Family 2. The Best Friend 3. The Evils of Dorm Life 4. The Evils of Technology 5. The Totally Bizarre. They’re all funny in their own mainly because most are absurd and seem ridiculous that students would even think that they would work and because I’ve tried it a few times as well. The last section though was particularly funny because of how crazy her excuse was and thinking that it would work. Students never cease to amaze. It’s a good read if you ever get the chance to read it.

The Kincaid Lesson

This post is going to be on the article titled “Girl.” This is series of statements that relate to the duties of a women. I assume it describes the duties of a woman in Jamaica. The speaker of the appears to be a motherly figure with attitude or boldness. She seems to be relaying the duties of a woman in their society to her daughter or someone coming of age.

The way the speaker list all the duties of a woman it seems that woman are to take a behind the scenes roll in maintaining the house. There’s a lot of housekeeping and maintenance that she needs to do. I think this is somewhat reflective of a woman but more now days a reflection of the duties of anyone. They don’t have to be just women that do these things. Anyone can do them.

This story has traces of a political structure being taught but it seems to be more geared towards a social structure being taught. Like I said earlier, it seems to be being told to a girl coming of age and how she should act around others and procedure on how to do womanly duties. It reflects the working class of this society. The what to dos and what not to dos.

The Rhode to fairness

Hello Audience,

Today I will be writing about an article that I read titled “Why Looks are the Last Bastion of Discrimination.” It’s a short essay addressing the moral dilemma of judging other on their look and giving more or holding back fairness.

Her essay begins with an example of a law prohibintg “unsightly” people from showing themselves in public. She builds on this theme through out the eassy.

I’m going to write her an email and I’ll tell you what it’s going to say.

“Dear Mrs. Deborah L. Rhode,

I’ve read your short essay entitled “Why Looks Are the Last Bastion of Discrimination” and find it very interesting. I somewhat agree with what you said while I find myself at times disagreeing. I believe that yes, there should be some for of discretion against this sort of thing. Preventing people from discriminating against other just purely based on looks. On the other hand, what differentiates looks from intellect? If you we’re hiring someone who needed a high intellect to do the job then why would hire someone else wasn’t fit for the job. Similarly, if you needed to fill a position that required someone to have a level of looks why would you hire someone that didn’t? I think it comes done to the individual business and them having their own autonomy. The decision is to be left to the company on such matters.

Best Wishes, Jack “

The Summary of Murder

The following is a summary of the news article entitled “Thirty-Eight Who Saw Murder Didn’t Call the Police.”

There are three parts to this article. The first is a brief summary or hook about the news article and the event it describes. The second is a detailed report from a detective about what happened the night of the murder. The third and last was a detailed report of the thirty-eight eye witnesses disclosing why they didn’t call the police that night. What I found particularly interesting was the way the writer wrote down all the addresses of the previous victims and also how he gave great detail the overall story. The order was done very well, creating a feeling of being present at the scene as it happened. I will now describe that order — First, the writer introduced the story with a hook. The title helps with this as well. This transitions to the detectives talking to the reporter, giving a “soap box” speech about how easy it is to call the police. After-which the officer proceeds to give a detailed description about the events. This includes the detectives talking to the witnesses and asking why they didn’t call that night. I couldn’t really pickup on any ideas other than the author trying to invoke a feeling of sympathy for the woman with the level of detail that was being provided. He possibly could’ve been trying to show the reader how easy it could have been to call the police and help this issue in the future.

This Just In:

This just in from the city of Moulmein an Elephant and a man have been reported to have been killed. Earlier this week and elephant went savage in the small town of Moulmein, Burma causing thousands to panic as the handler, commonly referred to as the mahout by the locals, was no where to be found. The elephant tore through the city destroying homes and shops. At one point even killing a local to the area, authorities later report that he had been tramped to death by the large beast. Locals report, after the lead authority in the area, Office Orwell, saw the man dead sent another to fetch an elephant rifle. The elephant was later found in a field of grass eating when it had been shot by the officer. The officer was found justified for killing the beast after the Burmese man had been killed. The locals, after the beast was dead, rendered the animal for its meat.

This is news article based of the short essay written by George Orwell entitled: “Shooting and Elephant” and the events were adapted to it a news article.

The Writing Process

Prewriting – Prewriting is the process of figuring out what you want to write. It includes outlining your thoughts into a rough layout of your paper.

Drafting – Drafting is the process of creating a rough version of your paper. It creating a prototype of what it’s going to be like. Here is where you figure out the feel of how you want your paper to be .

Revision – Revision is the process in which you tune your writing. Insert the quotes you need or take out things you don’t like or add things you think it needs. Also have a friend read your work. If needed make multiple revisions.

Editing – Editing is the fine tuning of your writing. This is part where you read through the whole thing and make sure your grammar is correct and everything is structured correctly.

Publishing – This is when you create a final clean copy of your work to share with others.

The writing is process is like any other process in which raw materials are refined into and product that is valuable. In the same iron ore is refined to get iron, the same is done to create a final paper from a raw form. Depending on what you’re creating determines how many times you go through this process.
